CURL CONFIDENCE: Consultation, Cutting & Creating Shape in Textured Hair

Tue, Mar 9 | 01:15 PM - 02:30 PM
Room 1E09

Session details:

Working confidently with curly and coily hair begins long before the first cut. It starts with understanding texture, movement, shrinkage, density, lifestyle, and the client’s relationship with their hair.

In this look-and-learn, Aveda Hall of Fame honoree, stylist, and educator Faatemah Ampey will demonstrate a thoughtful, inclusive approach to consultation and cutting designed to help emerging professionals build confidence and make intentional decisions when creating shape on textured hair.

Rather than attempting to cover every aspect of curl care, this session will focus on four essential areas: consultation, cutting considerations, shape, and finishing.

Attendees will learn how to assess texture and shrinkage, identify the factors that influence cutting decisions, communicate realistic expectations, and develop a thoughtful approach to textured-hair services from consultation through the finished result. The demonstration will connect each decision made during the consultation to the final shape, helping students understand not only what to do, but why they’re doing it.

Learning Outcomes

● Build a strong foundation for consulting with curly and coily clients.

● Evaluate curl pattern, density, shrinkage, movement, and lifestyle before cutting.

● Recognize common mistakes when cutting textured hair and learn strategies for avoiding them.

● Connect consultation, cutting, and finishing choices to create more intentional and predictable results.

● Develop greater confidence working with a broader range of textures as they prepare to enter the salon environment.
