Ingredient Intelligence: Evaluate Skincare Claims with a Cosmetic Chemist

Sun, Mar 7 | 03:15 PM - 04:30 PM
Room 1E02

Session details:

Every viral ingredient, product promise, and “clinically proven” claim eventually lands in the treatment room as a client question, and estheticians are expected to have the answer. This session gives a chemist’s-eye view of the ingredients behind the marketing: which claims hold up, which fall apart under scrutiny, and how to tell the difference so that professionals can separate genuine performance from packaging language and speak to clients with evidence rather than trend.

The goal is to spend equal time on what works and what doesn’t: pairing real actives to real mechanisms and results, then holding the most common myths up to the same standard, from “chemical-free” and “natural is safer” to collagen creams that supposedly rebuild collagen and the idea that a higher percentage is always better. Attendees may feel free to submit the questions and claims they hear most prior to the conference, so the session tackles the misconceptions they actually field on a regular basis.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate common marketing language (“clinically proven,” “dermatologist tested,” “chemical-free,” and “clean”) and explain what each claim does and does not guarantee
  • Separate evidence-backed actives from overhyped or underperforming ingredients, and articulate the difference in plain language for clients
  • Explain why concentration, formulation, and delivery, not the name on the label alone, determine whether an ingredient actually performs
  • Debunk persistent misconceptions such as “natural equals safer,” collagen creams rebuilding collagen, and “more actives means better results”
  • Translate ingredient science into clear, credible answers that build client trust and counter skincare misinformation
  • By understanding the difference between evidence and advertising, estheticians can build greater client trust and become a more credible source of skincare guidance.
