The Science of Skin Hydration: Water, Barriers, and the Ingredients That Hold It All

Mon, Mar 8 | 12:30 PM - 02:00 PM
Room 1E08

Session details:

"Hydration" is the most-used word in skincare, and one of the most misunderstood. This session breaks down what hydration actually means for the skin so you'll finally understand why a client can leave a "hydrating" facial still feeling tight, and how to build moisture strategies that truly last. The payoff is practical: sharper skin analysis, more confident consultations, and product and treatment-plan choices that clients will feel.

The goal is to follow water through the skin: how tiny aquaporin channels move it between cells, how the skin’s own built-in moisturizers (Natural Moisturizing Factors) and ceramides keep it in the stratum corneum, and how transepidermal water loss (TEWL) gives it away. Then the class will help decode an ingredient toolkit (humectants, emollients, and occlusives) and the detail most overlook: how hyaluronic acid molecular weight changes where it works and what it does.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the molecular drivers of skin hydration (aquaporins, Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), and barrier lipids) and use that lens to read what a client’s skin is actually telling you
  • Distinguish dehydration from dryness and identify each accurately during skin analysis, so your product recommendations start from the right diagnosis
  • Define transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and connect it to the dullness, flaking, and tightness clients complain about and what to change in their routine
  • Differentiate humectants, emollients, and occlusives by mechanism and layer them into treatment plans and home-care that actually hold
  • Interpret hyaluronic acid molecular weight (high vs. low MW) to choose and confidently explain the right product for each client’s needs
